Rites de passage is the first exhibition of new art committee for the Thomaskerk, in the development of the exhibition concept the modern religious building has been taken as a starting point where art and context are in dialogue with each other. The building is characterized by a sober interior where every corner is symbolic of a ritual that is designed for the Protestant worship.

A rite of passage is an anthropological concept of a ritual event that marks a person’s transition from one social status to another. The concept of rites of passage was first introduced by French anthropologist Arnold van Gennep in his book ‘Les Rites de Passage’ (1909). Rites of passage are rich in symbolism and the process of transformation is expressed in numerous motifs that are geographically and culturally dispersed. Rites of passage in Western culture are for example, baptism, communion, marriage, hazing and the first day at school.

In the works of the artists Gregory Buchert, Éric Giraudet the Boudemange, Allard van Hoorn and Philipp Kremer the contemporary rites of passage are central. Éric Giraudet the Boudemange will give a performance during the opening and Allard van Hoorn a performance during finissage, which respond directly to the context-rich building and its rituals. In the Thorn Birds Performance of Éric Giraudet the Boudemange the ritual of a pigeon fancier is conducted. The talk on pigeon fancying, traditionally a means of communication and now seen as a sport, will gradually turn into a poetic evocation of labyrinths through the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. During the finissage Allard van Hoorn will show a site-specific sound work using the organs present in the church. Music (through voice or organ) takes an important position in the religious and non-religious rituals.

In the poetic video work Gourdoulou by Gregory Buchert (in collaboration with Jonathan Schall) are two men central, one perched on the shoulders of the other, both horse and knight it symbolizes a mysterious quest through the elegiac nature. The tragicomic scene combines commitment and resignation, physical effort as well as contemplation. The paintings by Philipp Kremer questions the ideals of communities and solidarity, which is expressed in oppressive rituals of a group of people. His work raises questions on how the individual relates to the community. In the exhibition Rites de passage the art works by Gregory Buchert and Philipp Kremer reflect on the journey of life and the sense of community, while the performances use the ritualistic aura of the church to create new rites of passage which everybody can experience.

Rites de Passage is de eerste tentoonstelling van de nieuwe kunstcommissie voor de Thomaskerk, die bij het ontwikkelen van het tentoonstellingsconcept het moderne religieuze bouwwerk als uitgangspunt neemt waarbij kunstwerk en omgeving een dialoog met elkaar aangaan. Het gebouw kenmerkt zich door een sobere indeling waarin elke hoek symbolisch is voor een ritueel die is ingericht op de protestantse eredienst.

Een rite de passage (overgangsritueel) is een antropologisch begrip voor een rituele gebeurtenis die iemands overgang naar een nieuwe status in de samenleving markeert. De term ‘rite de passage’ werd geïntroduceerd door de Franse antropoloog Arnold van Gennep (1873-1957) in zijn ‘Les Rites de Passage’ uit 1909. Rites de passage zijn rijk aan symboliek en het proces van transformatie wordt uitgedrukt in tal van motieven die geografisch en cultureel verspreid zijn. Rites de passage in de westerse cultuur zijn bijvoorbeeld de doop, de communie, het huwelijk, ontgroening en de eerste dag op school.

In de werken van de kunstenaars Gregory Buchert, Éric Giraudet de Boudemange, Allard van Hoorn en Philipp Kremer staan de eigentijdse rites de passage centraal. Éric Giraudet de Boudemange zal tijdens de opening en Allard van Hoorn tijdens de finissage een performance geven, die direct reageren op het contextrijke gebouw en haar rituelen. In de Thorn Birds Performance van Éric Giraudet de Boudemange wordt het ritueel van een duivenmelker opgevoerd. De toespraak over de duivenliefhebberij, van oudsher een communicatiemiddel en nu gezien als een sport, zal geleidelijk veranderen in een poëtische evocatie van labyrinten via de mythe van Theseus en de Minotaurus. Allard van Hoorn zal tijdens de finissage een site-specifiek geluidswerk uitvoeren met behulp van de aanwezige orgels in de kerk. Muziek (via de zang of het orgel) neemt een belangrijke positie in religieuze en niet-religieuze rituelen.

In het poëtische videowerk Gourdoulou van Gregory Buchert (in samenwerking met Jonathan Schall) staan twee mannen centraal, de een op de schouders van de andere, die zowel paard als ridder symboliseren op een mysterieuze queeste door de weerbarstige natuur. Het tragikomische tafereel combineert toewijding en berusting als ook inspanning als contemplatie. De schilderijen van Philipp Kremer bevragen de idealen van leefgemeenschappen en het saamhorigheidsgevoel dat uitgedrukt wordt in benauwende rituele handelingen van een groep mensen, die vragen oproepen hoe het individu zich verhoudt tot de gemeenschap. In de tentoonstelling Rites de passage de kunstwerken van Gregory Buchert en Philipp Kremer reflecteren over het levenspad en het gemeenschapsgevoel, terwijl de performances gebruik maken van de rituele aura van de kerk om nieuwe rites de passage te creëren die iedereen kan ervaren.
