BEDAZZLE is an international group exhibition that traces the artistic legacy of razzle dazzle at an appropriate location: the military heritage site of Fort Vijfhuizen. Dazzle camouflage is a geometric abstraction decoration technique, which was used primarily during the first World War to camouflage warships. The camouflage consisted of a complex patterns of geometric shapes in contrasting colours, interrupting and intersecting each other, which made the distance and direction of the ships difficult to estimate for the enemy.

The modernist idiom of Dazzle camouflage still inspires artists today: in a direct and formal way, but also in a critical sense. Nowadays highly elaborated forms of surveillance invade our lives and we require entirely new forms of camouflage. The exhibition Bedazzle asks critical questions about identity, privacy and control in our over regulated society. The exhibition revolves around contemporary forms of Dazzle camouflage: through works with optical geometric patterns, to confuse modern technological detection systems and through military camouflage techniques.

BEDAZZLE is een internationale groepstentoonstelling die de artistieke erfenis vanrazzle dazzle traceert op een passende locatie: het militair erfgoed van Fort Vijfhuizen. Dazzle camouflage is een geometrisch-abstractie decoratie-techniek, die tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog voornamelijk werd gebruikt om oorlogsschepen te camoufleren. De camouflage bestaat uit een complexe compositie van geometrische vlakken en hoeken in sterk contrasterende kleuren, waardoor het inschatten van afstand en richting van de schepen werd gefrustreerd en de vijand kon worden misleid.

De modernistische vormentaal van dazzle camouflage inspireert kunstenaars vandaag de dag nog steeds; op een directe, formele manier, zoals in het werk van Florian & Micheal Quistrebert. Maar ook in kritische zin; onze tijd, waarin steeds efficiëntere vormen van surveillance onze levens binnendringen, vraagt immers om geheel nieuwe vormen van camouflage. De kunstenaars in BEDAZZLE zoals Metahaven en Simone C. Niquille stellen kritische vragen over identiteit, privacy en controle in onze overgereguleerde samenleving, en bieden bijvoorbeeld alternatieve strategieën om surveillance te ontlopen.

In de tentoonstelling draait het om hedendaagse vormen van camoufleren, verwarren en verblinden. BEDAZZLE toont een groep bestaande en nieuwe kunstwerken waarin word gerefereerd aan deze optische-geometrische vormentaal, en het verwarren van moderne technologische herkenning-systemen. Zo wordt BEDAZZLE zowel een visueel spectaculaire tentoonstelling waarin een aantal urgente artistieke posities samenkomen, als een kritisch onderzoek naar de hedendaagse mogelijkheden van abstractie.
